The best automatic litter box for multiple cats is not necessarily the one with the longest feature list. If you live with several cats, you know how quickly a clean litter box turns into one more job on the list. A good self-cleaning litter box really can make daily life easier. But your cats do not care which model is the most expensive or how many screens the app has. They care about having enough room, an easy entrance and feeling safe while they use it.
Three very different models have been part of everyday life at Beauty of Freya: the open-top Oneisall Ease S1, the enclosed CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X, and the PETKIT PURA X. Each has something we like and something we wish were a little better. We want to show you how they actually fit into a home with large and small cats, not only how they look in a manufacturer’s perfect product photo.
If you only want the short answer: we would look at the Oneisall Ease S1 first for a large or cautious cat because it is open and roomy. CATLINK Luxury Pro-X is interesting when you have several adult cats and want to follow their habits in the app. PETKIT PURA X is compact and well established, but it has more parts to clean and is not suitable for kittens under six months.

What mattered to us in everyday use
We did not look only at the feature list. We paid attention to the things cat owners notice during the first few days, but that are often missing from the box:
- how easily adult and larger cats can enter, turn and position themselves;
- acceptance of an open tray versus an enclosed globe;
- whether a cleaning cycle stops when a cat approaches;
- litter tracking outside the unit;
- odor control and waste-drawer handling;
- the work required to empty and deep-clean the machine;
- whether app data is genuinely useful in a multi-cat household.

1. Oneisall Ease S1: open and comfortable for large cats
The first thing you notice about the Ease S1 is that there is no enclosed globe. Your cat can look around normally and does not feel as if she is walking into a small tunnel. We especially like that for larger British Shorthairs, older cats and cats that simply refuse a covered box. And we all know that once a cat decides not to use something, the app will not change her mind.
Oneisall lists dimensions of 560 × 585 × 558 mm, an 11 L waste drawer and a maximum cat weight of 30 lb (about 13.6 kg). The basic model works without an app; the Pro version adds app connectivity. The manufacturer says the unit is for cats at least six months old or weighing at least 2.6 lb / 1.2 kg.

2. CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X: useful in a multi-cat home
The Luxury Pro-X is an enclosed model with an app that records litter-box visits. When you have several cats, it can be useful to see how often each one visits and whether a familiar routine has changed. For us, that can be a helpful little nudge to watch one cat more closely. The app is not a veterinarian, of course, but it may help you notice that something is different.
CATLINK specifies a 65 L globe, a 13 L waste drawer and a cat-weight range of 1.5 to 10 kg (3.3–22 lb). The footprint is approximately 71 × 58 × 60 cm, while the entrance is about 35.5 cm above the floor. The cat’s weight and ability to step that high are therefore two purchase checks that cannot be skipped.

3. PETKIT PURA X: a compact smart litter box for adult cats
The PURA X is an enclosed automatic litter box that connects to an app. It has several safety sensors and stops the cycle when it detects a cat nearby. It measures roughly 504 × 523 × 642 mm and weighs about 15 kg. It is not difficult to place, but it is not exactly light when you need to move and wash it, so leave yourself a little working room around it.
One point matters especially to us as breeders: the PURA X is not intended for kittens under six months. If you have a litter in the house, a conventional open tray must always be available. With very young kittens, there are no shortcuts.

How many litter boxes do multiple cats need?
One automatic litter box does not suddenly make every other tray unnecessary. Cats still have their own relationships, favourite places and moments when they do not want to share. A useful rule of thumb is one litter box per cat plus one extra. It also helps to spread them around the home, because cats may see several boxes placed side by side as a single toilet area.
That certainly does not mean a three-cat household has to buy four robots. We find a mix of automatic and ordinary open trays much more practical. Every cat still has a choice, and you have a backup while cleaning the machine, during a power cut or whenever one of the cats simply changes her mind.

How to introduce an automatic litter box safely
- Place the new automatic box beside the familiar tray and leave it switched off for the first few days.
- Start with a compatible clumping litter whose smell and texture the cats already know.
- Reward voluntary investigation; never force a cat into the globe.
- Run the first cleaning cycles manually while the cats are elsewhere.
- Remove the old tray only after every cat uses the new box calmly and consistently.
- Check the sensors, floor surface and fill level as often as the manual requires.
Give your cat time. Some will walk in immediately out of pure curiosity, while others may inspect the new box from across the room for days. Put the machine on a hard, level floor because thick carpet can interfere with weight sensors. Never start a cycle while a cat is inside, and always follow the manufacturer’s age and weight limits for kittens.
How to choose the best automatic litter box
Start by measuring the space—not only where the box will stand, but also the room you need to open the drawer and wash the parts. For a large cat, check whether she can turn comfortably inside and how much weight the machine supports. WiFi and an app are nice extras, but reliable safety sensors and enough room matter more to us. Also check compatible litter, replacement bags, spare parts, delivery, warranty and service before falling in love with the product photos.

You will often see Litter-Robot 4, Neakasa M1, PETKIT Pura Max 2 and Purobot Max Pro 2 in current buying guides. We have not ranked them because we have not used and filmed them for this comparison. We would rather share honest experience with three machines that actually stood in our cattery than make a longer list from specifications alone.

For us, the most important thing is still that the cat willingly uses the box. You can buy the smartest machine on the market, but if your cat gives it a wide berth, it has solved nothing. A good automatic litter box is safe, practical to clean and always supported by another familiar option.

Can two or three cats share one automatic litter box?
They can, provided all of them use it happily and you empty the drawer regularly. Still keep another litter box in a different place. That prevents one cat from blocking another and gives you a backup while cleaning the machine.
Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for kittens?
Not every model is safe for a small kitten. PETKIT says kittens under six months must not use the PURA X, while Oneisall lists a minimum of six months or 2.6 lb. We use conventional open trays for litters until every kitten meets the manufacturer’s age and weight requirements.
What type of litter works best?
Most rotating machines need fast-clumping litter with a particle size that passes through the screen. Tofu, mixed and crystal litters are not compatible with every sifting system. Follow the manual for the exact model.
Does an automatic litter box eliminate odor?
No. Faster clump removal and a sealed drawer can reduce odor, but the drawer, globe, seals and surrounding floor still need routine cleaning. Room ventilation remains important.
Can the app diagnose a health problem?
No. It cannot diagnose a problem, but it can show that something has changed. If a cat suddenly visits much more or less often, or her weight changes, take a closer look and contact your veterinarian if needed.
